Wet Felting and Sewing

Wet felting projects and needle felt

Recently, I have decided to teach children how to felt. Its a fabric we make and then we can move onto turning it into a sewing project.

It's an easy and very enjoyable activity. Lots of energy required for wet felting, the kids love it and do do their parents.

Wool roving laid out
Lay your wool onto a sheet of dress net which is laid onto a piece of bubble wrap.

This blue piece is to give you an idea of what to do but you cannot have holes in the wool and the wool needs to be more consistent in thickness :-)
We prepare up to 5-6 layers of roving. Lay them neatly in thin chunks going horizontally; then next layer vertically over the first and repeat.

Then add your picture on top.

Then lay a sheet of dress net on top; use lots of hand hot water, friction (rubbing with your hand - start softly to not move your picture pices about) and olive soap to form your felt.

When you feel your picture is stuck down ( you can check that by periodically gently peeling the net away and hopefully that's not stuck down to the felt)

Then roll the picture into s tube and roll the picture about 50 times, like you would a rolling pin. Then unroll and re roll the felt widthways 50 times.

You should at this point have a felted picture which you can rinse off inter the tap.
