Measure Twice, Cut Once...
I'm so excited to tell you that I have been adding a column to the local SK Magazines since the start of the new year. Sadly, I lost my mum and it has put a damper on everything, including this new blog that I decided to run, but now things are picking up and I am happily getting back to sewing and have been successfully teaching one to one sessions to some lovely ladies.
My first one of the year was lovely Pam, with the minimum of sewing skills, Pam contacted me to help her sew 2 bridesmaids dresses for her grandchildren. Pam had already bought patterns for the dresses, one of them which I personally thought would have been a complicated pattern to follow for an absolute beginner. However, determined, Pam pressed on.
Adding creativity to the pattern, Pam asked if we could go right in and alter the pattern, changing sleeves and necklines. We did.
Then with some guidance, Pam set off and produced 2 lovely dresses with some fabric she had bought to test out the patterns. Interestingly enough, the dresses turned out quite well and Pam's granddaughters are happy to wear them regularly.
Good measuring and taking your time to cut carefully is vital. I think a lot of new sewers feel they could quite easily get a project done quickly, taking shortcuts with the pattern layout and cutting.
It's important to note that Pam's dresses were made almost perfectly with the time taken to measure carefully and cutting carefully. Measure twice, cut once.
